Open Question: What makes non-American western people want to live in the US?

I'm speaking of Brits, Canadians, Aussies, Kiwis, Irish, Germans, Swedish etc... I ask because personally, I've never seen the interest and I was once offered a very lucrative job in Los Angeles. I just thought to myself, not only do I not want to move somewhere where my wife may be raped, but I might be raped as well (at gun point). That might sound extreme, but it's true that American crime rates are much higher than in other industrialized nations and the cost of living seems ridiculous as well. I assume westerners move to the US to chase acting dreams or whatnot, but is that it? Why did you move there if you did? (I'm not enquiring about those pushed their by their company).
