Open Question: Moving to Chicago from Los Angeles, is it really that dangerous ?

I'm moving this time in July. I'm wondering, i heard Chicago is the murder capital of the United States. Is there a lot of problems in the city and in areas such as Downtown Chicago ?.... Also, what are areas to avoid when living in Chicago.
